Thrush Box is a sound-based mechanical work that uses the low-frequency end of double bass drum sound files to generate and expel “exhaust”. Through a simple one-way air value system under the air intake filter, the six subwoofers, like traditional engine pistons intake air through the red filter at the top and expel spent air, “exhaust” through the chrome pipes at the back. The work is inspired by the machine like rhythmic qualities found is heavy metal music, and the underlying impetus that drives certain subcultures to express a type of kinship through listening or the creation of thrush or heavy metal music.
